Daniil Medvedev won his third match at the ATP Final Tournament in Turin, beating Italian Yannick Sinner (6-0, 6: 7, 7-6). The game didn’t decide anything, because yesterday it became clear that the Russian was going to the semifinals. Perhaps it was the lack of motivation that prevented him from sweeping the Italian off the court. The start was promising, though. MK-Sport will tell you how it happened.
Many newcomers attended this Final Tournament in Turin. In addition to Pole Hubert Gurkach and Norwegian Kasper Ruud , Italian Yannick Sinner and Briton Cameron Norrie were able to enter the courts .
Sinner replaced his compatriot Matteo Berrettini, who injured his abdominal muscles , and Norri, the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, with an elbow injured during training. Moreover, even Aslan Karatsev , who was urgently summoned as a new reservist , had the minimum chance to play in Turin . He managed to arrive in Italy and even conduct a training session, but fears about Gurkach’s health did not materialize.
The Pole on Wednesday did not go to training due to poor health, and the President of the Russian Tennis Federation Shamil Tarpishchev has already started sounding the alarm. The fact is that immediately after the Final Tournament, the Davis Cup begins, and in Turin almost the entire Russian team leaves its strength – Medvedev, Rublev , Karatsev.
True, no matter how much Aslan wanted to become a participant in the ATP final tournament, having played at least one match, Gurkach nevertheless pulled himself together and went against Alexander Zverev. Came out and lost. The Polish tennis player is leaving Turin, but wants to return because “he gained valuable experience and now knows exactly what else needs to be worked on next season.”
As a result, Alexander Zverev became the second semifinalist from the Red Group and will play with Novak Djokovic . Daniil Medvedev became the first semifinalist after two more rounds. And Wednesday night’s match with Sinner, in fact, did not decide anything.
In the first set Danya didn’t seem to notice that anyone was playing against him. Took a game with a steering wheel (6: 0) and … relaxed too much. Sinner quickly led, and eventually came to a tie-break in the second game.
It is difficult to say where there was relaxation, where was underestimation, or something bothered our tennis player, but towards the end of the second set he began to get nervous and angry with himself. He made strange mistakes, yawned sarcastically at the camera and gave the game to his opponent. And then he asked for a break and temporarily left the court.
By and large, little has changed since the break. The spectators continued to rejoice at the Russian’s mistakes, applauded their young red-haired miracle, and Medvedev’s coach Gilles Servar had nodules under the mask when Yannick played the break point with a beautiful blow. And when in the next game Danya lost his serve.
After this break, Daniel quit playing altogether. I was just frankly playing the fool, giving, as if from under a stick. Why bother if the result doesn’t solve anything? The semifinals are in your pocket, and Djokovic has already gone to Zverev. Medvedev’s opponent will be determined tomorrow – Rublev or Ruud. Maybe it was the friendly nature of the match that predetermined this game, but only the tennis player himself knows about it.
But even sometimes frankly childishly careless feeds hit the target, and then something happened at the reception. And then in this non-decisive match, Medvedev decided to practice the tie-break again. It was there that he wound up and won.
Of course, the lack of tournament motivation affected the nature of the game, as Medvedev later said, but he himself admitted that at some point the exhibition match turned into a very entertaining one.
On Friday, we are waiting for whom fate will determine Daniel as an opponent, and we will root for him in the semifinals.
