The census in India has been postponed indefinitely due to the global epidemic Coroid virus (Covid-19). The Center has extended the deadline for change of jurisdiction for all states to June 30, 2022. Earlier, the deadline was December 31, 2021. According to Home Ministry sources, the Registrar General of India oversees the census. This has been done at the request of the states as they are unable to update the changes in jurisdiction for various reasons.
Before each census, states are required to provide information on changes in the number of districts, villages, towns and other administrative units in the state, such as tehsils, talukas and police stations, since the last census a decade ago. Is. The boundaries of the administrative units are frozen three months before the start of the census. During this period the data is compiled and shared with the RGI which starts its preparation for the census.
For the 2021 census, RGI first issued a notice of change of jurisdiction on December 22, 2017. It then asked states to update the changes by January 31, 2020, with a December 31, 2019 deadline for freezing boundaries. After that, the census house listing phase was to start from April 1, 2020 to September 30, 2020. This was during the period when RGI also had to count for the National Population Register (NPR), which is its prelude. Under which National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be prepared.
Census activities postponed amid Covid surge
While both the NPR and the NRC have caused considerable controversy in the context of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), many states have openly opposed them. The last date of the census was postponed indefinitely in early 2020 due to the spread of Code-19. It is noteworthy that the deadline for updating jurisdictional changes has been extended several times.
