Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party (SP) has demanded from the Election Commission to stop the broadcasting of opinion polls being aired on various channels during the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. In a letter to the Chief Election Commission on Sunday, SP state president Naresh Atam said that the conduct of such opinion polls after the implementation of the code of conduct in Uttar Pradesh was a violation of the code of conduct.
He argued that after the implementation of the code of conduct in the state on January 8, the date for nomination for the first phase of voting on January 21 has also expired. Meanwhile, opinion polls are being shown regularly on news channels. This is misleading the voters.
Naresh Atam termed it a violation of the code of conduct and demanded immediate ban on opinion polls from the commission. He said that the election process was being affected by the delivery of opinion polls. The delivery of opinion polls should be banned with immediate effect to ensure free and fair elections in the state.
