MK-Sport presents a brief overview of all the most interesting things that have happened in the world of sports while you were sleeping.
The Christmas and New Year holidays are finally over, and the winter sports season has finally picked up pace: something important, or at least just interesting, is happening these days in almost all sports.
The European Figure Skating Championship has started in Tallinn. We have already talked about the fact that even in the best years this tournament was a rare opportunity for our team to make everyone listen to the Russian anthem many times, but this season our team also has a unique opportunity to set an absolute recordtaking all the medals.
After most of the European competitors refused to participate, fearing to catch the covid three weeks before the Olympic Games, the Figure Skating Federation sent all the strongest to Tallinn, so in terms of competition, Europe is much inferior to the Russian championship this year. The main doubt was caused by single skaters – in recent years, Russian male figure skaters have developed a bad habit of regularly failing. However, on the first day they simply delighted with their skating and took all three first places :
Andrey Mozalev , who was included in the team only at the last moment, is in the lead after the short program, Mark Kondratyuk is second, Evgeny Semenenkothird. This is especially interesting, because unofficially, even in the federation, it was recognized that, following the results of the European Championship, it would be decided who would get tickets to the Olympics.
Late in the evening, sports couples completed their performances in the short program. In this form, the Russians have even tougher competition: all three of our pairs are capable of winning any tournament, from the Grand Prix stage to the Olympic. In the last year, all the victories are shared by two pairs of coach Tamara Moskvina , but yesterday they had to face real competition from Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov , who are now being trained by Eteri Tutberidze .
The most experienced of our couples had several unsuccessful seasons, but in Tallinn they were almost flawless, scoring 81.58 points in the short program. Alexandra Boykova and Dmitry Kozlovskythey could not answer adequately and received five points less – they have 76.26 for a short. But Anastasia Mishina and Alexander Gallyamov responded with their best performance in their careers, set a new world record for points scored and took the lead – 82.36 points.
As a result, after the short program, Mishina and Gallyamov are leading, followed by Tarasova and Morozov, Boikova and Kozlovsky are in third place, and it is absolutely impossible to predict the denouement.
Biathlon, the second major televised winter sport, is also in full swing: the World Cup in Ruhpolding started on Wednesday. The women who ran the sprint were the first to enter the track. From our team, which made everyone happy last week in Oberhof, one could expect the continuation of a series of successful performances, but something again went wrong .
The new leader of our women’s team, Kristina Reztsova , ran fast, but made two misses and showed only 20th result, Irina Kazakevich missed only once, but ran slower and remained 35th, Uliana Nigmatullina finished in 49th place with two misses.More three of our biathletes managed to shoot without mistakes, but they desperately lacked speed: Valeria Vasnetsovawas 18th, and Anastasia Shevchenko – 57th.
In the end, Svetlana Mironova performed best of all , who, with clean shooting (which has not happened to her since 2019!) Got into the top ten, taking 8th place. Not exactly what we expected, of course. And the winner was Elvira Oeberg from Sweden. Second place went to Marte Reiseland (Norway), third place went to Dorothea Wierer (Italy).
And only in hockey, the main event took place not in the sports arena, but in the meeting room of the KHL office: the league decided to interrupt the regular seasondue to the sharp rise in the number of coronavirus cases. Over the past day, 60 (and 127 in just a week) positive tests have been identified, and already half of the clubs have either been quarantined or are about to be there.
Therefore, the leadership of the league decided to postpone the matches of four game days at once to a later date, and the championship will normally resume only on January 21. How and when exactly the postponed matches will be played out is still unknown.
According to rumors, options are being discussed with games during the Olympic tournament (then teams whose players made it to the national teams will suffer) or with a reduction in the regular season calendar (then those who have not yet secured a place in the playoffs will suffer).
And briefly about the other results of the night. In football in Europe, three supermatches took place at once. Real Madrid beat Barcelona 3-2 in Spain’s Super Cup. Valverde scored the winning goal in the 98th minute. Real Madrid continues to win, but everyone notes that Barca, under the leadership of Xavi , looked no worse than their eternal opponent for almost the first time this season.
Inter Milan defeated Juventus Turin 2-1 in the Italian Super Cup, with Sanchez scoring the winning goal in the 121st minute.
In England, in the semi-final of the League Cup, the London Chelsea beat fellow countrymen from Tottenham with a score of 1: 0 – here the teams kept within 90 minutes, but during this time the referee managed to cancel two penalties and one goal (and all – against the blues) .
And most importantly, for the first time in the season, Alexey Miranchuk played all 90 minutes for Atalanta – this happened in the Coppa Italia match against Venice.
In Russia, the main football news so far is only transfer news. Fedor Smolov moved from Lokomotiv to Dynamo , and in his place the railway workers immediately announced the forward of the Czech national team Jan Kukhta .
Well, in Africa, the local African Cup of Nations continues. As usual, the most interesting part of this tournament will start in the later stages. And in the first week at this tournament, by tradition, curiosities and exotic features of the organization are discussed almost exclusively. Over the past 24 hours, there were several oddities, but the Mali team was especially unlucky: at first,
the team was unable to conduct a training session due to machine gun fire in the vicinity. And in the evening she had to play with Tunisia under the control of the referee Jeanni Sikazve , who turned the match final into some kind of unfunny farce. First, he gave the final whistle in the 85th minute – the referee was hardly convinced. change mind. The game was restarted and Sikazwe promptly sent off the Mali player. assistants at VAR began to signal that this was a mistake, but the referee did not listen to anyone.
At the 89th minute, the referee decided that he had had enough – and again gave the final whistle ahead of time. The players of Tunisia (who were losing 0-1) almost beat him right on the field, and the officials made a scandal. As a result, after half an hour, the organizers decided to finish the last minutes – but with a different referee. However, the players of the Tunisian national team were already tired of all this farce, and they refused to enter the field.
And, as usual, we conclude our morning review with news from Australia. For a change, there is also purely tennis news today: the draw for the Australian Open in men’s singles has ended. Daniil Medvedev (2nd seed in the tournament) in the first round will play with the Swiss Henry Laaksonen , Andrey Rublev (5) with the Italian Gianluca Majer , Aslan Karatsev with the Spaniard Jaume Munar , Karen Khachanov with the American Denis Kudla . Note that Medvedev and Rublev got into one quarter of the tournament grid and can meet already in the quarterfinals.
But the main news, like the whole last week, is connected with the first racket of the world and the tournament Serb Novak Djokovic . The story of his attempt to get to Australia, not observing the rules established in the country, is overgrown with new details. Over the past 24 hours, journalists from different countries have checked the stories of Djokovic, his numerous relatives and members of his team and found a lot of inconsistencies in them .
It seems that no one believes the Serb at all. Well, from the Minister for Migration of Australia, Alex Hawke , they are waiting for a reaction to everything that happens in the next few hours: information appeared last night that it was today that he should announce the annulment of Djokovic’s visa and his expulsion from the country.
