Explaining the details of his demise, the Air Force said in a statement: “The Air Force is deeply saddened to learn that the brave group Captain Varun Singh has passed away. Group Captain Singh, who was injured in a helicopter crash on December 8, 2021, passed away this morning. The Indian Air Force expresses its deepest condolences and stands with the bereaved family.
A total of 14 people were aboard the MI-17 helicopter carrying General Rawat in Kannur, Tamil Nadu, of which group captain Varun Singh was still fighting to the death alone.
President Ram Nath Kavand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur have expressed condolences over his death.
