Rescuers are still removing rubble under which people can remain

Heavy rains reached India. Heavy rains, which lasted almost two days, resulted in the deaths of at least 33 residents of Mumbai, Maharashtra state. Most of them are women and children. Six more people were injured. This happened as a result of landslides , which provoked precipitation.

Rescuers work non-stop at the rubble, fearing that people may remain under them. The people living in the slums have suffered the most. The emergency once again made the authorities think about the problem of illegal buildings in the country, writes the Times of India.

  • It seemed as if hell broke loose. It all started when people just went to bed after dinner. Many must have died in their sleep, says one Mumbai resident.

“It looks like there was a mini-explosion in the sky, leading to a downpour,” says Environment Minister Aditya Thackeray.

Although it is worth noting that, unlike in Europe, where heavy rainfall was largely unexpected, the Indians knew what was ahead. Indeed, the monsoon season has begun in the country, when tropical downpours fall on the earth almost every day. True, what happened even by local standards is a very heavy rain.

The government allocated one-time financial assistance to the relatives of the victims and guaranteed free treatment for the victims. It also appealed to the municipal authorities with the requirement to organize pumping of water from the streets and to clear storm drains in order to avoid further flooding of roads and to restore the railway connection as soon as possible.

Now the streets of the city are covered with water and all kinds of debris. Lake Tang overflowed its banks and flooded nearby settlements.
