New Delhi: Padma Vibhushan award winning Kathak dancer Guru Pandit Burju Maharaj died of a heart attack here on Monday. He was 83 years old. He breathed his last at a hospital in Sakit, Delhi. Pandit Barju Maharaj’s grandson Swarnash Mishra wrote in his post on social media, “My grandfather is no more. I am sorry to say that he breathed his last on January 17, 2022. He was born on February 4, 1938 in Hadiya, Uttar Pradesh to a family of Kathak dancers. Burju Maharaj was only nine years old when his father Pandit Lachhan Maharaj passed away.
Pandit Burju Maharaj had performed Kathak dance in many programs in the country and abroad. His real name was Mohanlal Mishra, but his fame spread by the name of Pandit Burju Maharaj. He was an artist of the Lucknow Kalika Banda Din family. His uncles Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj were also experts in Kathak dance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences on the demise of renowned Kathak dancer Guru Pandit Burju Maharaj. In his condolence message on Twitter, the Prime Minister said, “We are deeply saddened by the demise of Pandit Burju Maharaj, who gave a unique identity to Indian dance. His death is an irreparable loss to the art world. My condolences to his family and fans in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed condolences on the demise of Pandit Burju Maharaj. Adityanath said, “Pandit Burju Maharaj proudly raised the head of the country and the state all over the world with his art and skill. She was one of the pioneers of classical Kathak dance in the Lucknow Kalika-Bandadin family. The damage done to the art world by his death is difficult to compensate. Praying for the peace of the departed soul, the Chief Minister conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family of Pandit Burju Maharaj.
