Kolkata: Voting for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections in West Bengal began at 7 am on Sunday amid tight security.
Voting is underway in 144 wards of KMC from 7 am today. The ruling Trinamool Congress has been in power in the KMC since 2010.
Voting will continue until 5 p.m. 40.48 lakh polling will decide the fate of candidates in 144 wards. The counting of votes will take place on December 21 and the election process will be completed by December 22 .
Despite the expiration of the term of elected members of the KMC in 2020, elections are taking place almost a year and a half later due to the epidemic.
The election is expected to see a direct contest between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On the other hand, the Congress and the Left parties have also campaigned vigorously to win the Assembly elections after their defeat. In today’s election, Trinamool has removed 39 councilors but retained former mayor Farhad Hakeem, former deputy mayor Atan Ghosh, MLA Debashish Kumar, Devort Majumdar, Ratna Chatterjee, Paresh Pal and MP Mala Rai.
A division bench of the Calcutta High Court headed by Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava and Justice R Bhardwaj on Tuesday directed the West Bengal State Election Commission to look into the petition filed by BJP leader Deb Dutt Manjhi seeking monitoring of the MC elections. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) was ordered to ensure surveillance for the elections by installing CCTV in all polling stations, strong rooms and counting centers.
