ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has approved the promotion of Lahore High Court Judge Ayesha A. Malik to the country’s Supreme Court, after which she will be the first woman judge in the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Will do The Dawn newspaper reported this on Friday.
Ayesha Malik’s development was approved by the JCP on Thursday. The Pakistan Judicial Commission, headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed, approved his appointment on the basis of majority (five votes to four).
This is the second time the JCP has called a meeting to decide on the country’s development. The commission was forced to reject their promotion due to a disagreement during a JCP meeting on September 9 last year.
Judge Malik’s promotion was also opposed by the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC). The PBC had objected, saying that many senior judges were being sidelined and promoted. The Bar Council also warned that if the JCP meeting was not canceled, the PBC and all bar associations would boycott all court proceedings, from the high courts to the lower courts.
