RAWALPINDI: A court in Pakistan’s Punjab province has sentenced a woman to death for posting blasphemous material on social media. According to Dawn News, the 26-year-old woman had posted blasphemous material in her WhatsApp status. A friend of the woman asked her to change it, but she did not do so and sent the material to him. The accused was arrested in May 2020.
The court, after hearing the case on Wednesday, found the woman guilty and sentenced her to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 200,000. According to the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, more than 80 people are incarcerated in Pakistan for blasphemy, half of whom have been sentenced to life imprisonment or death. In December last year, a Sri Lankan man was beaten to death and set on fire for blasphemy in Sialkot, Pakistan.
