Moscow again demanded written guarantees from the NATO leadership that it would not expand further to the East. At the same time, Russian leader Vladimir Putin expressed hope for a “positive reaction” from the Alliance to Russian demands.

The corresponding list, which contains specific proposals, was handed over on December 15 to the employee of the US State Department, Karen Donfried, who oversees European and Eurasian issues. This was announced by the aide to the President of the Russian Federation Yuri Ushakov. According to him, the Russian president hopes for a positive reaction from the West to Moscow’s proposals.

As DW clarifies, earlier the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov had already talked about this with Donfried. Then the question of providing Moscow with written guarantees of refusal from further NATO expansion was also raised.

In turn, Israeli diplomat and political scientist Yakov Kedmi said that he does not rule out that the Russian side will take decisive military steps if NATO continues to expand eastward. In particular, the political scientist did not rule out strikes on NATO bases in case of ignoring the interests of the Kremlin.
