Skiers run in during the Olympic season. The final composition of the Russian national team will be announced in mid-January. The selection itself will go through the World Cup races. Alexander Bolshunov was released from the selection by the unanimous decision of the coaching council.
“At the tournament in Finland (the tournament was held last week in Muonio) the team demonstrated what they were ready for. We are not setting goals for the athletes for the World Cup now. Through its stages, we select the composition of the team for the Olympics, ”said Elena Vyalbe, President of the FLGR.
The renowned athlete believes that it is unlikely that new bright names in cross-country skiing will appear in Beijing 2022. “But I’m sure the competition in Beijing will be hot.”
All members of the Russian team have been vaccinated against coronavirus. Last season was extremely difficult for a part of the national team precisely because of the consequences of an illness. Sergei Ustyugov had a hard time recovering, many were ill. Unfortunately, there were cases of the disease in preparation for this season. For example, in July, Kovid overtook Yulia Stupak, her training plan was adjusted. Stupak will only fly from Davos next week and will be selected for the Olympic Games.
Autumn was the hardest for the leader of the national team Alexander Bolshunov. According to Vyalbe, the status of the current holder of the World Cup in cross-country skiing does not yet allow him to show good results. A month ago, Alexander underwent surgery on the upper jaw, which had to be done after an incorrectly sealed neural canal of the tooth. I resumed training not so long ago, I will not perform yet.
But Bolshunov will not have to qualify for the Olympic Games. This is a coaching decision unanimous. “Now the task of Bolshunov and Yuri Viktorovich Borodavko is to prepare for the Olympic Games, so that the peak of form is at the right time and at the right hour.”
Alexander himself says that health problems required immediate intervention. After the operation, he began to exercise cautiously under the constant monitoring of doctors. “At the moment, doctors say that there is no need to compete. However, I am slowly returning to my normal training rhythm. “
As for the first stage of the World Cup in Ruka, everything will depend on how you feel: “I myself always want to compete. But we will see how the situation changes day by day. “
As you know, the International Ski Federation has made changes to the rules for overtaking: the leading skier has the right to choose any trajectory of movement himself, but at the same time he must take into account the speed and trajectory of the opponent behind his back. If two skiers are running side by side, both athletes are responsible for the potential interference.
The Russian Cross-Country Skiing Federation sent a letter to FIS that it strongly opposes the annual change in the rules. “But we will compete on them,” – this is how Vyalbe commented on the new interpretation of the rules, which the international federation is ready to go to after the high-profile scandals last season.
Although, the president of the FLGR admits, there are concerns about the new rules. “If earlier it was clear that you could not get up on the ski track until you were completely overtaken, now you can get up on someone else’s ski track without complete overtaking.”
And the proposals for changes that were formulated by Russia in May were not even considered by the working group. Vyalbe says he doesn’t know why: “We are used to this: there is one country that basically dictates its own rules, including the rules of the competition, you just have to be stronger, then we can also dictate our own rules. We are working on it”.
