On December 9, the chief of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, held a traditional New Year’s Eve meeting with foreign military attachés accredited in Moscow. The briefing was devoted to the activities of the Russian army in 2021 and key military security issues that cannot but worry Russia.
Among the problems, the general named, in particular, the degradation of the arms control system. The United States has derailed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, and now there is a real danger of American nuclear missiles of this range in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
The sphere of military confrontation becomes outer space. And that’s all because of Washington’s unwillingness to assume international obligations to prevent an arms race in outer space. New dangers are posed by confrontation in cyberspace, as well as the use of artificial intelligence technologies in the military field.
Gerasimov cited Russian intelligence data on the intensification of NATO’s military activities near Russia. Each year NATO conducts up to 40 exercises near us. It is clear that the objectives of these maneuvers are not peaceful. Non-aligned countries are involved in NATO’s orbit, for example, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Ukraine, Georgia.
US strategic aviation made 30 flights in just one month, which is 2.5 times more than in the same period last year. At the same time, cruise missile launches against targets in Russia are being practiced.
The US Asia-Pacific Air Force has also stepped up its activities. The crews of American bombers there are also practicing reaching the line of using cruise missiles, with a simulated missile strike, the general said. He noted that the Russian air defense is not asleep and “is taking measures to prevent incidents.”
In the Black and Baltic Seas, the warships of the non-Black Sea NATO states – Great Britain, Greece, Spain, Italy, and the USA – have been “registered”. Their actions are often provocative, Gerasimov said. “We are closely monitoring all movements, and any attempts to violate the border, of course, will be suppressed,” he said.
Gerasimov called a lie “the information disseminated in the media about the allegedly impending Russian invasion of Ukraine.” At the same time, he condemned Western supplies of lethal weapons to Kiev, which “are pushing the Ukrainian authorities to take drastic and dangerous steps.” At the same time, Gerasimov directly warned: “Any provocations of the Ukrainian authorities to resolve the problems of Donbass by force will be suppressed.”
Gerasimov, just in case, informed the foreign attachés about the development of the Russian nuclear missile deterrent forces. They named “Yars”, “Vanguards”, and also brought to the attention of foreigners that in the Strategic Missile Forces “more than 95% of launchers are kept in constant readiness for combat use.”
In practice, this means only one thing: in the event of a missile attack on our country, the enemy will be guaranteed a retaliatory strike. That is, if American missiles fly towards Russia, in a matter of minutes Russian Yars and Voyevods will be launched towards Washington or New York (depending on which targets the General Staff will lay in the flight programs).
In the meantime, Gerasimov also said that “one more nuclear-powered submarine with ballistic missiles“ Bulava ”will be introduced in the near future.
Among other similar news – the replenishment of the Russian orbital group of the missile attack warning system and the construction of a radar system for over-the-horizon detection of air targets, which allows you to control the airspace at a distance of up to 2000 km from our border. To the west, this means that our radars scan the airspace over almost all of Europe.
Not only the nuclear missile forces are being improved, but also the Airborne Forces. So, in 2021, Gerasimov said, two airborne assault regiments were formed. This is a lot, given the capabilities and morale of the winged infantry. “
In conclusion, the general wished the foreigners a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and wished them well-being. It remains to be hoped that the information about the Russian army, brought by the attaché officers to their leadership, will allow Western partners to come to the right conclusions and make 2022 calmer than the outgoing year.
