Yuri Gonchar, General Director of the Main Control and Testing Center for Drinking Water, spoke about the dangers of storing water in plastic bottles.
The expert shared details of a study on the content of total organic carbon in bottled water. It is a cumulative indicator of the presence of organic compounds in water that comes into contact with plastic.
“And we see just a geometric progression in the increase in the content of total organic carbon. That is, every month of contact of water with plastic leads to a significant increase in the concentration of organic compounds that are released from the plastic into the water, ”the specialist said in an interview with Sputnik radio. According to the interlocutor of the publication, for a year and a half this figure covers all the maximum allowable concentrations.
Repeated use of a plastic bottle is very harmful to health, especially, as the head of the center emphasized, in aggressive conditions: in the sun or if warm or hot water is poured into a plastic bottle. A huge concentration of organic compounds enters the human body, many of which are nothing more than carcinogens and toxic substances, Gonchar said.
When choosing bottled water in a store, it is important to look at the shelf life and the presence or absence of the word “natural” on the label. If the bottle does not have the word “natural”, then it can be ordinary tap water, purified using a simple pitcher filter, he summed up.
