Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. It took a long 17 years to build this aircraft carrier. Now India has joined the ranks of the few developed countries that manufacture aircraft carriers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched INS Vikrant at a ceremony at Kochi Shipyard in South India. On this occasion, he said that with this historic achievement, India has joined the ranks of the few developed countries in the world to manufacture aircraft carriers. Vikrant has given India new confidence.
According to BBC Hindi Service, the indigenously built aircraft carrier, named INS Vikrant, is 262 meters long and 60 meters high.
Built at the Cochin Shipyard, the ship has the capacity to accommodate and operate a crew of 1,700 and 30 fighter jets.
According to the news agency Reuters, the competition between the French fighter aircraft manufacturer Dassault and the American company Boeing for the supply of fighter jets for the plane continues.
Sources in India’s defense industry say about 75 percent of the aircraft carrier’s parts and structures are indigenously produced, with about half a dozen major industries and about a hundred smaller manufacturers supplying equipment and components. Participated in making machinery.
According to the British news agency Reuters, initially, this aircraft carrier will not be equipped with indigenously produced Indian aircraft but will be equipped with Russian-made aircraft, which will be borrowed from another aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy, Vikramaditya.
The Indian Navy currently has 40 Russian-made MiG-29 aircraft deployed on its sister aircraft carrier Vikramaditya. Some of these aircraft will be temporarily shifted to Vikrant.
According to the AP news agency, experts say that due to the six-year delay in the production of this aircraft carrier, its price has increased six times and its production cost has reached two and a half billion dollars. There is a mill. The 47,400-ton vessel will be fully operational by the end of next year i.e. 2023.
Can India compete with China?
According to experts, despite acquiring this capability, the Indian Navy still lags far behind its rival China’s naval force.
China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy has 355 ships, including two aircraft carriers, 48 destroyers, 43 frigates, and 61 corvettes.
In June this year, China added a third aircraft carrier to its fleet whose ‘flight deck’ or the entire deck can be used for flight with the help of the ship’s latest ‘catapult’ system. In contrast, India’s aircraft carriers have relatively small decks.
India’s navy consists of two aircraft carriers, 10 destroyers, 12 frigates, and 20 corvettes.
In terms of capacity, it is important to understand that there are other aircraft carriers that can accommodate more aircraft, such as INS Vikramaditya. The British Royal Navy’s Queen Elizabeth can carry 40 aircraft and the US Navy’s Nimitz-class carrier can carry more than 60 aircraft.
America is number one in having aircraft carriers
There are only 10 countries in the world that have aircraft carriers in their navies. Among them, the United States is at the top with 11 aircraft carriers. It is followed by China, which recently added an aircraft carrier to its navy, bringing the number of aircraft carriers in its fleet to three.
