Robot boats : Russia is developing a crewless torpedo boat that can fight in the Arctic. Information about the development appeared in a number of media. “MK” asked the expert to tell why we need unmanned boats and how effective they can be.
– In general, the United States is actively developing underwater and surface drones. They allocate huge funds for this. The Chinese are not far behind. And we do this too. We have accumulated considerable experience in creating underwater robots, – Vasily Dandykin, a member of the expert council of the Officers of Russia, captain 1st rank in the reserve, told MK.
As an example, the specialist named the Poseidon unmanned underwater vehicle, which many mistakenly call a torpedo. In fact, this is an autonomous system with artificial intelligence capable of carrying a nuclear charge, which has no analogues in the world.
Regarding the needs of the fleet, Dandykin said that now “anti-submarine defense is required to be strengthened, especially in the near sea zone.” This also applies to ships. The option of creating boats with anti-submarine weapons will largely solve this problem. The creation of an unmanned torpedo bomber boat will make it possible to secure the crews and save the budget.
Since the boat can be controlled remotely, the near sea area will be better protected. This is especially true for the bases of strategic submarine missile carriers, which need effective protection, the expert believes.
Regarding the effectiveness of unmanned boats, the expert said, everything depends on the “boat filling”: electronic warfare equipment and weapons on board. Also, the ship must be stable in waves. The development of such a marine robot is not a matter of one day or even one year, but the problem needs to be solved.
Comparing the new development with the crewless anti-mine boats announced in 2019, Dandykin noted that anti-submarine ships perform a more serious task.
“Defusing the most sophisticated mine and destroying the most sophisticated submarine is a big difference,” said the expert. In his opinion, the test tool is an order of magnitude more complicated than anti-mine drone boats.
