The Biathlon World Cup kicks off in Östersund, Sweden on November 27. The coaching staff of the Russian national biathlon team named the athletes who will perform in the first stages of the World Cup based on the results of control trainings.
The Russian men’s national team at the first stages of the World Cup included Alexander Loginov, Eduard Latypov, Matvey Eliseev, Evgeny Garanichev and Karim Khalili. Control races took place in Khanty-Mansiysk from 12 to 13 November. By the decision of the coaching council, Alexander Povarnitsyn was first included in the team. But nevertheless, there was a change – Daniil Serokhvostov will speak instead.about:blank
In the selection, Russian biathletes ran a sprint and a mass start. Povarnitsyn became the best according to the results of the races, he took two second places. Serokhvostova finished third twice. But now Daniel will go to the starting stages of the World Cup due to the decision of the IBU, which has just clarified the eligibility criteria for athletes in the new season.
Alexander Povarnitsyn is currently lacking qualifying points: he has not started in IBU competitions since December 2019. The biathlete won his highest award – a silver medal in the sprint race at the summer world championship – just in 2019. Alexander will now start the season at the IBU Cup.
It was difficult to form the women’s team. Svetlana Mironova and Ulyana Nigmatullina’s seats were booked, although Ulyana received her reservation along with the displeased reaction of head coach Mikhail Shashilov: due to injury, Ulyana did not fulfill his plan.
For the rest of the athletes, the control starts were given a pass to the World Cup. The selection took place in Tyumen from 15 to 16 November.
The women’s team included: Svetlana Mironova, Ulyana Nigmatullina, Larisa Kuklina, Irina Kazakevich (the biathlete got frostbitten hands in the sprint, made five mistakes, she was included in the composition by the decision of the coaching council), Valeria Vasnetsova and Kristina Reztsova (who recently became a mother). Anastasia Shevchenko, Tamara Derbusheva, Evgenia Burtasova, Natalia Gerbulova, Ekaterina Noskova and Anastasia Goreeva are going to the IBU Cup.
SBR President Viktor Maygurov, commenting on the composition of the women’s team, said that the decision on the team for the World Cup was unanimous. Svetlana Mironova and Ulyana Nigmatullina were selected due to being in the top 20 of the overall standings, Larisa Kuklina, Irina Kazakevich and Valeria Vasnetsova – by the coaching decision, and Kristina Reztsova – according to the sports principle, since only Kuklina and Mironova were higher in the two control races.
