In response to the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, 13 Muslim candidates from the Samajwadi Party-Rashtriya Lok Dal (SP-RLD) alliance and 17 candidates from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) will contest for 58 seats in the first phase. Elections will be held on February 10 in Western UP, where the Muslim population is high.
This means that in the first phase, about 22% of the election tickets have been allotted to Muslim candidates by the SP while the share of BSP is about 29%. According to the Election Commission of India’s website (ECI), News18 collected the information through official lists of both the parties and nominations filed by candidates.
List of BJP claimants:
The BJP has not fielded a single Muslim in its list of 109 contenders for the first phase. In the forthcoming elections in the first phase, both the SPRLD alliance and the BSP have fielded Muslim candidates for eight seats. This is expected to help the BJP win the seat as Muslim votes could be split. In the 2017 Assembly elections, seven of the 58 seats were contested by Muslim candidates from both the SP-Congress alliance and the BSP. Despite this, the BJP had won all the seven seats.
This time the eight seats on which both SP-RLD and BSP have fielded Muslim candidates include Bhoon Police Station, Sewal Khas, Meerut, Meerut South, Dholana, Bulandshahr, Koil and Aligarh. After Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s 80 to 20 per cent comment on voter support for the BJP, the SP feels that Muslims will unite behind it to defeat the BJP but The BSP has always had good support among the community in Western UP. In the first two phases of the 2017 elections in Western UP, Muslims are believed to have largely supported the BSP.
Differences of alliance:
As in the 2017 elections, the SP-led coalition has not fielded any Muslim candidate for the six seats in Muzaffarnagar district. It has been in the background of the Muzaffarnagar sectarian riots of 2013 in which differences between Jats and Muslims were coming up and since then Muslims have allied with SP or BSP and Jats have shown their loyalty to BJP. However, the SP-RLD alliance has given tickets to four Muslims in Meerut district and Naheed Hassan in Kirana.
