The season in figure skating was unexpectedly interrupted in the most interesting place – the Grand Prix final, to which the skaters had been striving for two months, was canceled due to the risk of the Omicron strain spreading in Japan. MK-Sport will tell and show what the decision of the Japanese government has deprived the fans of.
The large Russian national figure skating team was supposed to be in Osaka for the Grand Prix finals right now. 11 out of 24 possible places in the main start of the year were taken by our athletes, but neither they nor their foreign rivals flew to Japan. A week before the start of the competition, it was decided not to hold the final – this is due to the new strain of the coronavirus “Omicron”.about:blank
In Russia, the cancellation of the final was perceived in different ways: some were upset, others concentrated on preparing for the Russian Championship, which will be held from 23 to 26 December in St. Petersburg. The fight there is definitely expected to be no worse than the Grand Prix finals, because Olympic tickets to Beijing are at stake.
Nevertheless, the cancellation of the Osaka tournament deprived us of many joys: firstly, Kamila Valieva (a clear favorite of the competition) was left without the first big title in her career, and secondly, we will not see the programs that we have already admired this season.
Rhythm dance by Gabriella Papadakis / Guillaume Sizeron
The French program with a mix of songs by John Legend “Made to Love” and “You & I” is already called the opening of the season. The number is truly stunning with its technique and unexpected decision on the components. Better to look once.
“Bolero” by Kamila Valieva
At the Russian Grand Prix, student Eteri Tutberidze perfected her free program “Bolero”. The world record in total points speaks for itself.
Free dance by Mikhail Kolyada
A student of Alexei Mishin recently abandoned the Schindler’s List free skate in favor of last year’s White Raven. It is not known what program Kolyada performed in Osaka, but Mikhail always did the best with Voron.
The struggle of the Russians with the Chinese
In pair skating, four duets from Russia claimed victory in the Grand Prix final; perhaps only the Chinese Sui Wenjing / Han Song could impose a fight . The reigning world champions Anastasia Mishina and Alexander Gallyamov had the most chances to win . And here is their short program, which raises doubts among many.
